It is a good idea to check your drive(s) for errors every now and then; especially if you are having some difficulty with your machine.

 

  • Open "My Computer."
  • Right click on the main hard drive, ( usually this is called 'local disk C:' )
  • Select 'Properties'
  • Select 'Tools'
  • Click "Check Now"
  • Select 'Automatically fix file system errors.'
  • If you have a good bit of time, then also select 'Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors'
  • Click Start.
  • You may be warned that Windows can't complete the tests until you reboot and asks if you want to postpone the test until after the reboot - Click 'Yes.'
  • Repeat these steps for any other hard disks or partitions that you have might have - many people only have one.
  • Restart the PC.
  • Windows will checks each disk/partition according to the settings that you selected and it will repair any errors it finds if possible.
