To start your pc in 'safe mode' |
If your pc is behaving unusually then you may need to start it in "safe mode" to get it running so that you can fix it. Safe mode means starting the pc with the bare minimum needed to run the pc and can often allow you to run your computer while you fix a different problem which might have interfered with the pc when in normal mode. There are other reasons for running the pc in safe mode also - for instance if a virus scanner needed to delete a file that was locked and in use in normal mode. To start your pc in safe mode ... - Repeatadly press the F8 key as the pc is restarting. { However some multimedia keyboards can override the Function keys on startup so if this happens then switch of the multimedia extensions using whatever method - usually a special extra button - that is normally used to achieve this when you need to use the function keys for their origional function.}
The ctrl key can achieve the same thing as the F8 key on certain computers. - When you see a black and white screen asking you to select the start mode, use the arrow keys to select "safe mode"; then press the return or enter key to proceed.
- When windows has started, you will know if you are succesfully in safe mode by the graphics as they will probably not look as well as they normally do - also "safe mode" will be written on the four corners of the desktop.
Restarting the pc returns it to the normal mode Safe mode is meant to look a bit funny so there's no need to adjust your colours, desktop layout, etc.
